October 11-14 - Belowra Station, Tuross River and Wadbilliga NP

Directions
 ·         Travel to BODALLA and turn left at the Police Station – sign says NERRIGUNDAH / EUROBODALLA
·         After 8.9 km turn right over bridge – sign says – NERRIGUNDAH / BELOWRA. 3km after bridge the road becomes gravel.
·         At NERRIGUNDAH turn right at the monument and follow the signs to BELOWRA on Belowra Rd. A quick stop at the historic monument at Nerrigundah is worth it. Shortly after Nerrigundah the road forks - keep left. (Distance between Nerrigundah and Belowra is 24 km)
·         Exit the bush and enter Belowra valley over a ramp and turn left over another ramp 100m along – gate is opposite a small monument in the right hand paddock.
·         Follow track and Y & F THOMSON signs, through some gates and past a house on the hill to the left
·         Turn left at large flat grassy area on left with a couple of small falling down shacks (the old cricket pitch) – if you go up the hill to a 2nd house, you’ve gone too far
·         Follow track down to river and that’s where we camp

If you’d rather follow me in, we’ll be leaving Tura Beach at 9am and stopping at Bodalla for a quick break.  You can join the convoy at Bega/Brogo/Cobargo/Bodalla if you’d like.
The trip takes about 3 hrs from Tura Beach with a stop.
The track into the camping area is suitable for camper trailers/Avans but NOT caravans.

What to Bring
·         All the usual camping gear
·         Food & drinks
·         Firewood (but we can also collect if need be)
·         $20 per person per night cash
·         Water shoes (if you don’t want to hurt your footsies or get your boots wet when we cross the river)
·         Swimmers and a wet suit (the water’s coming from the Monaro so will be nice and fresh!)
·         Special request for guitar, Jeff! (any other instruments welcome.)

The river water is drinkable but feel free to BYO if you’d prefer

Program
Friday
Arrive, set up
Short, steepish walk to valley overlook (2-3km return) – a good test to see how you feel about the hills!
Afternoon tea at studio of Artist David Byard  (TBC)
Dinner and fireside shenanigans

Saturday
7-8km Hard walk with easy/moderate options
·         We’ll walk over some paddocks onto a disused firetrail (easy 5-6km return)
·         Before wandering upwards into a gorgeous rainforest gully (moderate 6-7km return) – Morning Tea
·         Then there’s a hard very steep 500m with some bush-bashing to an amazing rock with gorgeous views – Lunch
·         A gentle climb up to the meandering western valley ridge where we’ll summit a few rolling tops
·         1 km steep descent back to campground
Those looking for easy/moderate options will just retrace their steps back to the campground from their turnaround point

Sunday
7-8 Hard walk with easy option
·         We start with a river crossing from the campground and then wander over some paddocks on the southern side of the river
·         Avoiding the “Paddock of Doom”, we’ll meander up an easy creek bed with picturesque groves and remnant rainforest for 3km before stopping for morning tea
·         Those not looking for a hard walk can turn around here and follow the creek bed back to the campground
·         For the adventurous, we’ll be finding our way back via a hard, untracked, un-reccied loop, climbing a steep spur to a ridge over a couple of tops with short, steep pitches from saddles before a steep (there’s that word again!) down back to the river/campground

Monday
5-6km easy walk
·         From the campground, we walk west along made track, through private property and eucalypt forest, tracing the river to a quaint morning tea spot.
·         Those wanting to stay easy can turn around a retrace their steps
·         Those wanting a little bit of vigour can undertake a 200m, close to perpendicular scramble (OK – it’s not that steep but it’s steeper than anything else we’ve done) to another made track where we can wander back to the campground
Pack up, return home via ice-cream at the Bodalla Dairy for those who choose to do so!

Jeff has his photos available HERE.
